Insomnia can be a problem for anyone in any age bracket, gender or social status. It may affect teens, adults, and even infants. But even so, insomnia is not really a disease, but rather a symptom or side effect of both external and internal factors.

Normally, insomnia manifests because of a disrupted lifestyle.  If something becomes too strange or difficult for the human mind to handle, then a the problem can bloom. Our bodies require normal sleeping patterns and a sufficient amount of rest time.  If sleeping patterns are disrupted in any instance, then it will be really hard to recover from such drastic change and the result will be insomnia.

One of the side effects of insomnia is a failure to focus on details. The sufferer may even fail to understand what a person in front of them is talking about because the mind continuously “skips thinking”. If the sufferer is a student, then they may fail to function properly in class.  If the sufferer is working, then they may fail to focus on their job during the day.

You also have to remember that since the brain is the body’s “command center”, the body will grow weaker if the brain is unfit due to lack of sleep. As a result, a weaker body will develop, thus it will be more prone to diseases because of stress.

Emotional instability can be one of the severe side effects of insomnia. The inability to sleep enough and continuously when the body and mind need rest will drive a person into an emotional havoc.  This can further lead to anxiety and insanity. It can be very troublesome to those who are around the sufferer, because of the tantrums and moodiness.  Misunderstanding caused by insomnia can lead to a tarnished relationship.

There are so many side effects of insomnia and the aforementioned examples are just to name a few. It is really important that you take action immediately if a sleeping disorder has been bothering you for a week or more.  Untreated insomnia can lead to serious medical conditions.

Learning to relax and let go of the worries is the best cure for insomnia.  Perhaps you can do yoga or meditation so you can sleep. Drinking a glass of milk before bed time or eating cheese can maximize the chance of having a good night sleep too. If sleeplessness still continues despite all the relaxation method you’ve used, it would be best to consult a doctor.
