HMO Insurance Disadvantages
78Because of affordability, HMOs are a popular form of private medical health insurance. However HMOs have advantages and disadvantages just like any other type of health plan.
HMO stands for ‘Health Maintenance Organization’. With this type of Plan, members need to pay a fixed amount each month for a variety of health services chose from the plan. Services like doctor visits, lab tests, hospital stays, emergency care, x-rays, surgery and more are the benefits that can be availed through this type of health insurance. In exchange for the monthly premium payments you pay, you can have comprehensive services under minimal payments.
HMO medical insurance can provide a client with different services under affordable prices but there can also be drawbacks to this type of coverage. Unlike the other types of medical coverage, HMO is much more restrictive. In most cases members will be required to only choose a primary care doctor under the list that the company will provide and this doctor should be the one in charge of all of your medical care; you can’t keep a family doctor even if you have had him in years if your doctor is not under the provided list.
It is very difficult to consult to a specialist or visit a doctor or even a hospital outside of the given network when you are under HMO insurance. It is also equally difficult and sometimes impossible to be able to exchange variety of services and prices offered by other doctors or hospitals and there is not much flexibility offered with your treatment either.
Even though HMO insurance offer services in a wide range and variety with specialists to choose from this type of insurance benefit is also being criticized for being more concerned with making money rather than being concerned with their patients’ health and well-being.
Many doctors are also not happy about this policy because it sometimes takes away the important decisions from them regarding a patient’s health care condition. Most of the time, HMO insurance companies makes decisions in order to save money for itself and not to provide the best option for a patient’s care.
Nothing really is perfect though, and certainly no health insurance provider is perfect, there are always advantages and disadvantages when it comes to a service, and it goes the same for HMO insurance. So when it comes to choosing an insurance benefit, think of your needs and compare it with the offers that will laid down in front of you. Always weigh the advantages and disadvantages. Nothing is perfect but there is always something better for you.
